In Memory of
The Old Town Hall

(Also known as the Union Hotel)
Circa 1823

On March 10, in the year 2000, the long journey of Englishtown's old Town Hall, located at 13 Main Street, came to a sentimental end, after years of deterioration.  With mixed emotions, members of the Borough Council, Administrative staff, and other passers-by gathered and watched as the  workers from C.A.P. Construction leveled the building in a little under 6 hours. The building held a lot of memories for some of us, both good and not so good, and the demolition only served to reinforce the idea that the old must eventually make way for the new, and how a once sleepy little borough has struggled with it's own growing pains.

The next few pages serve as a graphical memory of the building, which at it's peak housed all of the Borough of Englishtown's administrative offices, as well as the Borough's Fire Department, Police Department, and Municipal Court.  It will now be the site of a small "pocket park" and some very much needed parking for the downtown area.

The Borough had to get approval from the N.J. Historical Society before the building could be torn-down.  Part of the process required a historical survey to be completed. Some of the documents reproduced here are part of that survey, which was completed by the Historic American Buildings Survey of the National Park Service, Philadelphia, Pa. 19106.  HABS. No. NJ-1239.
